Since the 2020 release of the When Dawn Breaks LP, SBUERS has continued to develop and explore his sound through the reinterpretation of conventional musical styles and tropes. Releasing Friday the 20th August 2021, Little House EP shows SBUERS drawing influence from a variety of electronic influences such as grime, drill, bass and ambient soundscapes. The project will be released on all streaming platforms and bandcamp, with the film releasing on SBUERS’ YouTube channel.
The EP is accompanied by a full-length CG animated film, produced and directed by 3-D mastermind Z_Bleach which, in a very literal sense, builds upon the initial photograph which inspired the project. What was initially a brief capturing of a fleeting moment has become an expansive examination of a space from a memory through painstakingly recreating a shot for shot representation of the setting. The same can be said for SBUERS’ production on this project which brings with it a merging of artistic styles and influences, building on existing thematic ideas to bring his world to life.
Texture and emotion can be felt throughout the project. The opening track Third Act balances tentative synth pads with glitched out drum patterns and 808’s which dart and bounce erratically. The quote “I have come to a crossroads in my life…” can be heard echoing through the outro and is a reflection of the shift in SBUERS’ sound over the past months.
Title track Little House is an emotive and tender beat, made up from swelling pads and distant cries over a swaying drum pattern. Full of detail and ambience, snippets of forgotten conversations and a piano from a distant memory, this track embodies the ethos of the project, being able to stay in one place and to fully immerse yourself in the surroundings, allowing yourself to feel and actively perceive.
Miamo Boom ebbs and flows with rolling hi hats and haunting percussion with sombre pads and string plucks. A track to be listened to under the cover of darkness, SBUERS emphasises the groove of the track with glitches, twists and turns, showing the darker side of his production style.
All Good Yh closes out the EP in a hybridised Ambient Drill fashion. Emotive melodies tentatively wash over precise percussion and growling 808’s, closing the project invoking introspective thought.
